8 Years Later…
“Tristan no, don’t touch the dirt. That’s nasty. Be still.” I said to my one year old son while I knelt down and put the flowers in front of the headstone.
“I know it’s been a minute since we’ve been here but things have been kind of crazy lately. Where should I start? Even though you can see everything I think I should give you the run down anyway. My dance studio is doing good. Really good actually. So I guess you can say I’m a successful business owner.” I said while placing Tristan in front of me. He was just getting the hang of walking so I had to hold him up.
“Being a mother is hard. I guess I kind of thought it would be easier but it’s no joke. I wish you were here to see him. He’s smart, he’s goofy and hyper as ever. Just like his daddy.” I said with a small chuckle.
“Angel is doing good. She’s a mother too. Got a little girl who looks just like her daddy. I told that girl they were gonna have one Asian looking baby and I was right. She’s getting married in two months. Of course I’m gonna be the matron of honor just like she was for me. That day was a crazy one. I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. I can’t even explain the nervousness of everything. You know I always thought you would be right there waiting for me to walk down the aisle with a smile on your face. I guess something don’t work out the way that you think.” I sighed as Tristan kissed my cheek. I smiled and kissed his back.
“What else? Oh me and my dad are good. Finally. Took us one hell of a minute to get there just because he’s so stubborn. He walked me down the aisle which meant the most to me. I thought I would never forgive him after he missed not only my high school but college graduation. I mean now that I think about it I was kind of wrong for lying but was it really that serious that he had to wait almost five years? I don’t think so. But him and Keisha are good. Got their own baby now. Not by conception but by adoption so I’m officially a big sister. Her name is Amani they got her like a year ago. It’s crazy seeing him raise somebody else but maybe he won’t screw up with this one.” I said with a little laugh.
I put my hands on the picture on the headstone then turned my face as the tears came down.
“I miss you. I miss you so much it’s ridiculous. You would think after some time this would get easier. Or that’s what people say but it’s not..” I wiped the tears with the back of my hands when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up and smiled seeing my husband’s face.
“You okay?” He asked picking Tristan up.
“Yeah I’m alright.” I stood up straight dusting my pants off.
“You sure you’re okay?”
“Yeah I’m fine. I’m sorry if this is weird for you.” I said to him and he chuckled.
“Baby it’s fine. I mean it is a little odd to visit somebody you never met grave. But you obviously need some support so I got you.” I smiled and he leaned down a little bit and kissed me.
“No problem. You ready or do you need some more time?”
“No we can go.” I kissed my fingertips then touched the picture. “I love you mommy.” I smiled and grabbed Chris’s hand as we walked back to the car.
“What time is the flight again?” I asked him. He looked at his watch then back at me.
“Two hours. Which means we have to hurry up and get your bags ma.”
“My bags? What about you?” I strapped Tristan in his chair then got in on the passenger side.
“I’m not going back until tomorrow. Staying out here for the launch.”
“Oh yeah Last Kings store right.”
“Yeah, I would tell you to stay but you got the recital to get ready for.” He said after he got in the car and pulled off.
“I know. Wait don’t you have your first practice of the season tomorrow?”
“Yeah, which is why I will be on the red eye back to Miami tonight. I’m not gonna be at the launch long.”
“Alright well then that’s what it is.” I looked out the window while playing with the locket around my neck.
“You okay?” Chris asked.
“Yeah I’m fine. Thank you for coming with me.”
“No problem. I told you I got you.” He kissed grabbed my left hand then kissed it before kissing the diamond wedding band on my finger.
I just smiled and looked back at Tristan. I chuckled then looked out of the window again as we drove to our house that was here in LA. I swear I love my life right now. Got my man, my son, my family. Yeah nothing could be better at this moment.
“Why didn’t Diamond stay again?” Angel asked me just as the plane was landing in Miami.
“She had some showcase recital type thing going down that she had work on.”
“Y’all need to come back to LA man.” Ty said and I chuckled.
“We do go back. During the off season.”
“But she wants to live there.” Angel said making me sigh.
“Me and my wife are not living in two different states. Fuck all that. It’s not going down.” I said shaking my head.
I know Diamond wanted to be back in LA. I mean it’s all she knows but you would think after five years she would be a little used to it.
Right now life was good. I was the starting point guard for the Miami Heat with a 100 million dollar contract plus some major endorsement deals. . Got drafted right out of college. Which Diamond wasn’t all that happy about at first just because I stopped going and had to move to Miami while she was still going to USC.
That shit was hard. Long distance doesn’t really work. Four months without her right there keeping me on my feet and I slipped up. Went and fucked around her. She didn’t know about it of course. But I couldn’t sit in her face and smile knowing I fucked around her so I just told her.
To say she was mad would be a fucking understatement. She lost her mind. Fucked up the condo I bought for myself and everything. She picked up a glass candy dish and threw it at my fucking head before leaving. It was six months before I saw her or even spoke to her again. Then another six months before we got back together. We’ve been married for two years now. I didn’t think I would settle down so young especially as a professional basketball player but when you find the right one and you know it’s the right one. Why wait? Exactly there is no point.
We had Tristan last year. I thought I couldn’t love Diamond anymore after that but I was proven wrong when I watched her give birth to my son. I never saw myself being the family man but I was and I love every minute of it.
The whole long distance thing is not gonna work just because I remember what happened last time. I refuse to be away from my wife and my child when I don’t need to be. Nah I’m not having it.
“Angel leave the nigga alone. Focus on what we’re trying to do ma.” Ty said to her and she smirked.
‘Yeah whatever. I am focused. You just focus on helping me pick out flowers.”
“Why you can’t do with Diamond to do that shit. Flowers aint my thing.”
“Ooh daddy said a bad word.” Their four year daughter Ayanna said.
They weren’t doing too bad either. Actually they were doing damn good. Ty ended up hitting it big as a rapper. Real big and now this nigga was launching Last Kings internationally.
“I know. Your daddy has a dirty mouth. He needs to watch it. Besides Michael I’m not marrying Diamond am I? Nope I’m marrying you. So you bringing yo ass to pick out some flowers. Get it? Got it? Good.” She said making me laugh. I swear these two will never change.
Once we landed we got off the jet and it was two cars waiting for us.
“Yo we headed to the house. We’ll head by yours later.” Ty said and we slapped hands as I got into the car that was waiting for me and they drove me home.
Once we pulled up to the house I got out and walked inside. When I did I went straight to living room where I saw Tristan sitting on the floor with his toys while the TV was playing Sponge Bob You can tell he’s my son right. I walked over and picked him up scaring the shit out of him a little bit which made him scream then cry. When he did Diamond came running into the room with a knife in her hand.
“Whoa don’t go Freddy Kruger in here it’s just me.” I said and sucked her teeth.
“Don’t do that shit Chris. You were about five seconds from losing your life.”
“My bad.” I walked over and kissed her.
“I’m glad you’re back.”
“Glad or happy? Two totally different things.” I said as I put Tristan back on the floor so he could finish playing with his stuff.
“Happy. I’m happy my husband is back home.” I went back over to her then kissed her on the lips.
“I’ll show you after you get back from your practice and your son is asleep.”
“Well let me get my ass up outta here then.” I kissed her again the let go of her waist. “You wearing my clothes again?” I asked once I gave her the once over.
“Yeah you won’t miss them. You’ll be fine.”
“Yeah aight. Let me go change.” I pecked her lips then went upstairs to change my clothes so I could go to practice. Got my career, a son, a stable fucking household. Plus the honor of saying I married the girl of my dreams. My Young Love.
